Chinese Dessert-Tangyuan Soup (Dongzhi)

Tangyuan is a Chinese dessert made from glutinous rice flour and was prepared during Winter Solstice Festival or called Dong Zhi by Chinese. Traditionally, the Dong Zhi Festival is also a time for the family to get together, making and eating this Tangyuan dessert because this balls of glutinous rice symbolize reunion. Chinese also believe, by eating this Tangyuen mean getting old one year and welcome the winter coming.

Ingredients

  • 500 gram Glutinous rice flour
  • 300 gram Sugar ***For soup base
  • 8 pieces Pandan Leaf ***For soup base
  • 2 Liters water ***For soup base
  • 1 Small sweet potato
  • 6 pieces Pandan Leaf *** For green color of dough

Directions

Step 1: Rinse the pandan leaves and tie into knot.

 

 

Step 2: Use a pot and boiling for 2 liter of water with pandan leaves and sugar. Cook it for 15 minutes as soup base.

 

Step 3: Cut the sweet potato into small cube size and cook it with one cup of water and some sugar. Then smash it for prepare the yellow orange color of dough.

 

 

Step 4: For the white color dough, pour the 125gram of glutinous rice flour in big plate,add water slowly and 4 tablespoons of sugar syrup (prepared from Step 2) until the texture become the dough. Then continue knead the dough for about 5 minutes. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll it into small balls.

Step 5: For green color dough,use the mixer machine and mix the pandan leaves for green color juice. Then add into 125gram of glutinous rice flour in big plate, add water slowly and 4 tablespoons of sugar syrup (prepared from Step 2) until the texture become the dough. Then continue knead the dough for about 5 minutes until the color evenly. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll it into small balls.

Step 6: For red color dough, add in the ROSE syrup with 125gram of glutinous rice flour in big plate,add water slowly until the texture become the dough. Then continue knead the dough for about 5 minutes until the color evenly. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll it into small balls.

 

Step 7: For yellow orange color dough, add in the smash sweet potato (prepared from step 3) with 125gram of glutinous rice flour in big plate,add water slowly until the texture become the dough. Then continue knead the dough for about 5 minutes until the color evenly. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll it into small balls.

 

Step 8: Drop all the colors balls into boiling water and cook them until they float (about 5 to 10 minutes). Then transfer its to cold water and drain it before put into sweet soup pot (prepared from step 3).

 

Step 9: Finally serve it and enjoy to taste it.
